One hundred and seventy miles from Aksum to the sea at Adulis, and the same road back, as many times as you can afford it.

Buy goods where they are cheap and sell them where they are dear. Load the animals lightly and they will last; load them heavily and you will learn their names by their limps. Above the plateau edge at Kohaito the country belongs to donkeys and the water is free. Below it, the country belongs to camels and the water is everything.

The Year

The Ethiopian year runs to thirteen months — twelve of thirty days, and then ጳጉሜ (Pagumē), a short month of five. It opens at መስከረም (Meskerem), when the great rains end and the highlands come up green with the meskel daisy. That is when a caravan sets out.

The highlands take their rain in the middle of the year, while the coast road bakes. So the further into the dry season you travel, the less water waits for you below the escarpment — the month in the corner of the screen is your warning.
